The Breakroom was the place to be last Friday, let me
tell ya! Japan's finest garage/trash rock band, Guitar Wolf, played
a blistering set for a most appreciative crowd. By the end of the
evening, there wasn't a non sweaty body to be found within a two block
radius, I swear!
Seiji shows us all what rock & roll really
is!
The evening started out with sets by the bands The Tokyo
Drifters and The Makers. The Makers seem to be the band of the moment
in Seattle, receiving quite a bit of hype and numerous gigs. Although
their songs made we want to shake my boo-tay, on a whole they kind of left
me flat. Besides their pretentious image, there's nothing very distinctive
about them. The crowd really enjoyed them, but hey, they're no Guitar
Wolf, that's for sure!
Seiji, the Japanese ambassador of cool!
When Guitar Wolf hit the stage, everybody was ready to rock.
And these guys didn't disappoint! They started their show with their
backs to the audience, Seiji was drinking a beer and Toru and Billy were
combing their rock-a-billy dos. The crowd loved it. As soon
as they started their first song, the crowd near the front of the stage
began dancing and moshing non-stop.
Billy plays his bass real low! Yea
baby! Toru, the drummer... I think I'm in
love!
The first time I saw these guys, they opened up for the
Cramps at the Showbox. I was blown away by their trashy straight
ahead rock & roll style, and their leather trousers. They were
very very... tight! You could see outlines, everything! But
enough about the trousers, these guys can really rock!
Go cats go! Billy & Seiji drive
the crowd at the Breakroom crazy!
Why is it that a Japanese band like Guitar Wolf can take
American rock and roll, chew it up and spit it out better than most bands
here can? Everything about these guys is just so cool, the way they
look, the way they play, damn! And they always give 200% at their
shows, at least they have both times I've seen them!
Seiji instructs an audience member on the
finer points of holding a guitar pick.
Near the end of the show, Seiji (the
guitar god), brought an audience member up on stage and had him play guitar.
Surprisingly, this guy could play, and Seiji took this opportunity to rip
it up on the vocals, and ride around on stage on the shoulders of another
obliging audience member. Everybody was going nuts by this time.
The stage was sopping wet, covered with beer and water. The band
was still ready to rock all night, although it was close to 1:30 a.m.
By the time they played their last encore, they looked exhausted (in a
good way) and the audience was spent as well. All in all, one kick
ass rock & roll show! The way it's supposed to be! Who
said rock is dead? Huh? I'd like to introduce him or her to
Guitar Wolf!
