Man, what a line-up! And such
anticipation I had for this show, I'd been waiting for weeks! I was
not to be disappointed!
I had been hearing for months about
how awesome the Kent 3 are, but somehow hadn't gotten around to seeing
them live. Let me tell you, the rumors were correct! These
boys can rock, and man did I dig it! Their sound is a bit reminiscent
of Wire, with a bit of The Fall thrown in there too. With a crazy
ass-shaking back beat and infectious guitar riffs. Man oh man can
these guys play. And there really are three of them - finally some
truth in advertising! My only regret is that I forgot to buy a cd
from them - oh well, next time! Scroll down for some photos of these
boys rocking out:
Next up was my personal favorite band
in the entire world, Tacoma's own Girl Trouble. These guys are preparing
to release a new album soon, and judging by their performance at this show,
it should be smokin'! Many new songs were played, and high quality
rubber bats were tossed into the audience as a lovely souvenir. (Not
like those cheap bats most bands distribute!) Kurt was in rare form
in his male nurse uniform, and Bill (Kahuna) rocked out most righteously.
Dale & Bon were their usual cool, groovin' selves. Michelle,
Pattie, Mara, Dani, and I danced our asses off. Does anyone know
where we can procure some new ones?

Next up was the man we'd all been waiting
for, Mr. John Doe. Star of stage and screen. Punk rock legend.
And one of the sexiest bass players (besides Richard Hell) on earth.
John Doe played guitar in his three
piece band, The John Doe Thing. They played a lot of new songs, all
well received by the crowd. Mr. Doe was affable and entertaining,
much to the delight of everyone. When people yelled out song suggestions,
he acknowledged them and said he'd play that song. Here he is below,
taking song suggestions from the audience:
Many of the songs he played were from
his new ep on the Kill Rock Stars label entitled "For the Rest of Us."
I picked one up at the show, and I highly recommend it. I've seen
John Doe play solo with Smokey Hormel a couple of times, and I've seen
him play with The John Doe Thing one time before. This show was great,
measuring up to or exceeding his previous performances.
After the show, Michelle presented
John & the band with some lovely cookies she had made for them.
Michelle had come to the show with her mother Maria and me, and Michelle
and her mother have spoken with John Doe before on numerous occasions.
He always remembers them, and they introduced me to him.

He is a very nice and personable
man, not to mention handsome as all hell. We took photos (which appear
here) and told him that we were flying to L.A. on July 4th to see X play
the "Hootenanny '98"
show. We are also planning on seeing X in Seattle
on June 5th! He signed my cds and Michelle's coat. We love
John Doe!
